Barnes village by the River Thames is famous for the The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race as well as the The London Wetland Centre a bird sanctuary in the centre of a city. If you do not have time on your trip to explore the English Countryside, Barnes, with its village green and pond, ducks and old world pub give you a taste of England a short walk away!
Barnes has a variety of restaurants, and in less than 10 minutes walk, all tastes and budgets can be catered for. They range from an excellent pizzeria to gourmet restaurants highly rated in the Good Food Guide. Our local, typically English pub,The Halfway House serves good simple food at reasonable prices and all my guests have been delighted with the friendly welcome they receive from the publicans Mike and Jill. An added bonus is that it is only a two minutes walk away.
Nearby Richmond Park provides cycle and horse riding as well as beautiful countryside walks and a great car free environment for jogging.Kew Gardens by contrast has a wealth of rare exotic plants to enjoy. There is a nearby leisure centre and swimming pool for the health conscious and for a more sedentary occupation the Wetlands Centre provides an opportunity to spot many beautiful migrant and native birds.
The Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Club Museum is open all year and in June or July those lucky enough to obtain tickets, or who are prepared to queue can watch the tournament; a bus taking you "door to door". In the week before the tournament you can visit the Lawn Tennis Association Training Centre and view the qualifying rounds. It is located just across the road in Priory Lane. If playing tennis is also a passion there are public courts a 10 minutes walk away.
Twickenham Rugby Stadium is easily accessible by train; for an even closer experience of rugby, Rosslyn Park Rugby Club is just five minutes away. For local entertainment the Hammersmith Apollo is nearby. The Bull's Head, overlooking the river is renowned for its top-class jazz music playing every night and is a 15 minutes walk away. Also a short bus ride away is the Brooks Blues Bar which has world class blues bands every Friday night.
